way to tour the Welsh landscape is to rent a holiday cottage. There is plenty
to see in Wales, such as the golden beaches and rugged sea cliffs or the Snowdonian

or tiny harbours, dotted round the coastline.

Is the smallest
of the three countries in Britain. It occupies a broad peninsula on the west side
of Britain. The country also includes the island of Anglesey (with fast
catamaran car ferry connections to Ireland). The country is almost entirely mountainous
with two main ranges, the Cambrian that extend north to south through the centre
and Snowdon in the north, the climate is very similar to that of England. It has
always maintained its historical independence and individuality and has it's own
parliament - the Welsh Asembly (although most major laws are still passed at Westminster,
London). Left:
Sowdon Region- Right: Portmerion
Language
The
official languages are English and Welsh and you will see that most signposting
on the roads and street signs are in two languages. Population
The shape and nature of the land have a huge influence on population. About
half the population live in the south in an around the Cardiff, Newport and Swansea
area.Travel
into the hills and mountains and the population soon becomes thinly scattered
across large areas dotted with the occasional small town/village.
Climate
Wales is a mixture of weather patterns. It has been said Wales is green because
of the rain. Not so true as many parts of the country have average or below-average
rainfall - it even boasts some of the sunniest spots in Britain

The
Counties of Wales There

Montgomeryshire — Sir Drefaldwyn, Pembrokeshire — Sir Benfro Radnorshire — Sir
Faesyfed re. (Powys
covers the former administrative counties of Montgomeryshire and Radnorshire,
most of Brecknockshire, and a small part of Denbighshire) Cardiff
the capital City
of Wales It
celebrated its centenary in 2005 It is a vibrant city that has undergone a major
transformation of the last few year with the docklands development being transformed
into a stunning waterfront with a wealth of attractions, leisure facilities and
its own Visitor Centre 'The Tube' to keep you informed. There is also the Millennium
sports stadium that has been home to English football final whilst Wembley stadium
has been rebuilt. It
has a thriving cultural scene, accommodation
to suit all budgets, a diverse mix of entertainment,
restaurants
and bars
and some of the best shopping
in the UK. It also has the advantage of being very close to the sea.
Cardiff’s
arts facilities are exceptional, with the National Museum and Gallery housing
the second largest Impressionist collection after Paris. Cardiff's Bay has been
transformed into a stunning waterfront with a wealth of attractions, leisure facilities
and its own Visitor Centre 'The Tube' to keep you informed. South Wales is strewn
with castles and Cardiff has its fair share; most notable the stunningly elaborate
Cardiff Castle located in the centre of the city. On the northern edge of Cardiff,
set in the wooded hillside, is the fairytale Castell Coch (Red Castle) located.
Left:
Llangollen- Left:
Cemaes Bay, Anglesey
Other
major towns and cities are:
Newport - a busy industrial town that is close to Cardiff and benefits
from all of the capital's facilities and infrastructure.
Swansea
is the country's sesond largest city and like Cardiff the dockland area has been
extensively redeveloped as a leisure centre and marina. Holyhead
(see
below) has excellent road connections with the new A55 from the north coast of
Wales and Chester border area connecting it to the port (Fast ferry services
to Ireland)
Left
and right Colwyn Bay - North Wales
Colwyn
Bay: Has
a long promenade (pictured above) and goes from Old Colwyn to Penrhyn Bay and
has some beautiful beaches. It is close to the Weslsh Mountain Zoo and Snowdonia
is in sight. It is on the A55 Expressway and the construction of this major link
road has not spoilt the area. North
Wales - The Island of Anglesey - Ynys Môn Anglesey
is joined to the mainland by bridges crossing the Menai Straits - road and rail.
(Britannia road bridge and Telford rail bridge) People drive through the centre
Anglesey without really taking too much notice of it as it is the connecting point
via the excellent modern dual carriageway A55 from the mainland to the car ferry
terminal at Holyhead - Caergybi. If
you are taking the car ferry service to Ireland (Stenna or Irish Ferries) it is\well
worth allowing additional time to look at the local heritage. Better still if
you are taking a holiday in North Wales spend some time looking around. What

Tips
For Travellers: November 2006 - New EU hand baggage restrictions The
European Union has adopted new security rules that restrict the quantity of liquids,
gels and pastes passengers may carry in their cabin baggage, effective immediately The
new rules apply to all passengers travelling from any EU airport and it’s
important to familiarise yourself with these new regulations.
- All liquid
containers must be carried in a separate clear plastic, zip-top or re-sealable
bag that does not exceed 20 cm x 20 cm or one litre capacity.
- All
items must fit in the bag comfortably and the bag must be completely sealed
- There
is a limit of one transparent re-sealable plastic bag per person.
- At
the airport security search, the plastic bag must be removed from the cabin bag
and x-ray screened separately.
- Liquids
must be held in individual containers not exceeding 100ml (approximately 4 fl.
Oz) and may include - Shampoo, Suntan lotions, Toothpaste, Hair gel, hair spray,
Perfumes, Liquid or aerosol deodorants, Cosmetics, Water and other drinks, Soups,Syrups,
Any other item of similar consistency
There
are two exceptions to the rules: - Baby
food needed during the flight
- Medicines
needed during the flight
Exempt
items must also be placed in a separate transparent re-sealable bag and presented
separately at the passenger security screening area. The

11/06 What
happens when you purchase a bottle of whisky, gin or wine in a local supermarket
and want to bring it into an airport in the EU, Norway, Iceland or Switzerland? All
liquid items over 100ml purchased in an EU country cannot be carried as hand luggage
through the security search area. only liquids that have been purchased airside
at another EU airport, or on board an aircraft operated by an EU carrier may be
carried as hand luggage. You will need to show proof of purchase to demonstrate
this, the airport or airline will pack these items in tamper evident bags and
the receipt would be placed in the bag as proof of purchase. Special
information for transit/transfer passengers If
your journey involves changing flights at any EU airport, special restrictions
apply. You may only take liquid items (for example duty free) through the security
search point at your connecting airport if: Liquid
items in excess of 100ml purchased from other airports or on board other airlines
